Fleetwood Shuttleworth has suffered 3 miscarriages and is pregnant again. She is deeply worried this pregnancy will end the same as the others. Fleetwood meets a young woman, Alice Grey, a midwife like no other, a "wise woman", who she employs to help her provide an heir for her husband.
All is going well until Alice is arrested for witchcraft but Fleetwood is determined to prove her innocence.

The Pendle Hill witch trials have interested me for a long time so when I knew this book was set here in 1612, I just had to read it!

For a debut, this book is beautifully written, I was submerged in the time period and I couldn't put it down! It was fascinating to read the way women were treated at this time and that innocent women were being pulled off the street to be trialled as a witch.

I thought this was a great story, I highly recommend it. I have already ordered The Foundling, the next book from Stacey Halls.
