This books was really great. It is set at the time of the Pendle witch trials and follows a young mistress and her struggle to produce an heir.We first meet Fleetwood when she has already lost three babies and is pregnant for the first time. Fleetwood is a very loveable character and comes across very well. A 17 year old way in over her head. We later learn of her unusual childhood and almost terrifying past.
A chance encounter with a young woman leads to Alice Grey becoming her midwife. Although, the more we find out about Alice the less we seem to know. We see their friendship develop and Fleetwood goes to great lengths to help her midwife turned friend.
