Right from the opening pages, you can tell that this is going to be a page turner, can't put it down, tale of betrayal.
I read this book last week, and the twist in the middle had me heartbroken for Fleetwood (and what a great name, eh?).
It was a very good book that focused on the true story of the witch trial of Pendle Hill, in which nine women and two men stood trial and were found guilty of witchcraft. Ten of these eleven were found guilty and hung, while one was found innocent. No one actually knows why just one woman was found innocent, so the author built up this fictional narrative of that period in her life. Alice was a midwife, and knew her way around herbal remedies. She helped Fleetwood bring her child into the world when they were sure they were both doomed to die. A great read.
