The Familiars is a book based on true events in the 1600's. The fictional story woven around these events is enthralling, enchanting and enlightening.
The portrayal of a young girl forced into womanhood at an early age, fighting against injustice, prejudice and patriarchy, creates a character who is easy to like, and easy to empathise with. The way in which the story progresses creates a frustration with the other characters, and with Fleetwood's constant battle to fight for the truth.
This book is well written and mixes historical fact with pure fantasy, making for an entertaining read. It took me a couple of chapters to really get into the book but it didn't take too long to set myself firmly on Fleetwood's side against her numerous battles, with her mother, her husband, her own body, and the judicial system.
