This book is set during 1612 when the infamous Pendle witch trials took place. The suspicion, fear and ignorance that existed at that time are well described in this story about Fleetwood Shuttleworth and her midwife, Alice Gray.
Alice was the only one of the twelve ‘witches’ wHo was found not guilty at the Lancaster trials.
This book is very well written. It conveys the contrast between the wealthy and the poor, the educated and the uneducated.
Having recently read The Witchfinder’s Sister, this is a subject which I find fascinating - an important aspect of British social history about the roles of ‘wise’ women and their treatment in Britain during the Stuart times.
The cover of this book is gorgeous and very distinctive.
