I really enjoyed this book. The characters were warm and well described so you just felt like you knew them. The theme of female suppression, a common theme often written about, was uniquely covered in this book via the ‘familiars’ slant. I’d never heard of familiars before and found this aspect endearing. I loved the foxes popping up now and then, just as she needed the comfort. The strong male characters were not very likeable, as I’m sure was the plan. I really felt for the women of this time and prayed for the downfall of these horrendous men. The maternal theme that also runs through the text is beautifully portrayed, the old midwifes and medicines reminded me of how tough life was for these poor women, then to be branded witches- just disgraceful. A powerful historical text, with perfect subtle relationships running through. A must read.
