Let's just start off by saying that I am a fan of historical fiction, so this book was always going to appeal to me. But, I also fell in love with the cover. It's gorgeous! And a book that gets described by red magazine as “historical fiction at its feminist best”..well, bring it on.

The book is set during the Pendle Witch trials. You can tell that Halls has a real interest in this period and the book is based on the historical timeline. It is beautifully written and is a real insight into that period of history. It has lots of twists and secrets running through it which kept me enthralled with the plot. I liked Fleetwood and her character’s transformation from naive socialite to a woman willing to fight for her child and friend is bold and courageous. There is a line that really resonated with me, ‘Rumour spread faster than disease, and could be just as destructive.’ The more threatened people are feeling, the more likely that gossip will be mistaken for fact. Being a woman was a risk and I relished in the fight against power by the strong female characters.

The book is a winner for me. It is a slow burner, which I don’t mind with historical fiction as it allows you to get to grips with the time period and understand it all. But suddenly it shifted gear and I couldn’t put it down. If you are a fan of historical fiction, then give it a go.
