As a history teacher who covers the witch craze of the 1600s in lessons, this book was one I was instantly drawn to and couldn't wait to read. Halls does a fabulous job of evoking 17th century England and the superstitious attitudes of its inhabitants, a time of great suspicion during which neighbour accusing neighbour was an everyday occurrence. The atmosphere of suspense and dread is developed beautifully throughout and I couldn't put it down, I had to know what would become of Fleetwood and Alice as both are likeable characters that you're rooting for from start to finish. Fleetwood really comes in to her own as the novel progresses and is a protagonist I developed great empathy for, I adored her dog Puck too. I gave four stars rather five because I felt there were little bits and pieces left unexplained that could have been explored more, however that may have been a conscious decision on the part of the author to allow the reader to make up their own mind on some things. On the whole it's definitely a page turner and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes historical fiction with a strong female lead. The cover is stunning too!
