The Familiars is a little different to my normal read, it’s the first historical fiction I’ve really read. It follows a 17 year old Fleetwood Shuttleworth who is pregnant for the fourth time after three stillbirths. When she finds a letter that suggests that she and her baby won’t survive this pregnancy, she enlists Alice, a young midwife who promises to make sure this time is different. When Alice is associated with women being tried for witchcraft, Fleetwood does all she can to save Alice, so she can save her baby.⁣⁣

I really enjoyed this one. There were moments where I truly felt for the characters and the things they went through. Fleetwood frustrated me at times, and there were points where I was getting so angry about a situation and had to remind myself of the times it was set in and how things were so much different in 17th century. I loved the mystery of Alice’s character, I always wanted to know more about her the more I read. There were also some twists that I didn’t see coming throughout this one, which is something I love from a good book!⁣⁣

This was a fantastic debut novel from Stacey Halls . I loved that although it was a piece of fiction, Stacey researched the time and place of the setting and used real people for these characters, it makes it feel that bit more real. I’ll definitely be adding The Foundlings to my TBR!
