I have wanted to read this book since it first came out and managed to get a copy in my local library. It’s about a seventeen year old girl, who is pregnant. She discovers that her husband has been told she is unlikely to survive another pregnancy. The story is inspired by, and loosely based on, the Pendleton witch trials. Sadly the book isn’t for me. I found the characters flat and the entire book depressing. I expected to like it and was really surprised that I didn’t. I found it difficult to have any sympathy for or empathy with any of the characters and it was one of the very few books that I actually didn’t finish. I’ve been in the situation previously where I’ve decided not to finish a book and put it aside only to pick it up again just to see what happens. This sadly wasn’t one of those occasions.
