I devoured this book in less than two days as it's such a page-turner on a par with The Silent Companions and The Corset.

I've been interested in the Pendle Witch trials since reading The Daylight Gate by Jeanette Winterson so it was great to enter back into this world and read about the characters from a different aspect.

I love a book with a strong female main character and Fleetwood appealed to me with her independent mind and unwillingness to conform.

I thought the scenes set in the prison were outstanding, they really came to life and I could imagine how awful they were.

I love historical fiction but have had some disappointing reads recently of books which were over hyped - this one certainly restored my faith :)

It was such an accomplished debut by Stacey Hall and I will definitely be reading her next novel.
