This book had me gripped! Although I’m not entirely sure why.

I loved the depth of personality given to the main character Fleetwood even if I didn’t always like the personality traits themselves. The mystery surrounding her relationship with Alice is very intriguing and without a doubt the most interesting part of the book but I can’t help feeling a little disappointed that there isn’t more to the story with Alice being accused as a witch. The author draws to the reader’s attention to similarities between Alice and the young Device girl, and also mentions the presence of a sinister sounding doll In Alice’s bed in her fathers house. Yet nothing ever comes of these peculiarities, leaving me to feel there should be slightly more to the story.

Despite this, I found the book very difficult to put down and was drawn in by Fleetwood’s plight and her determination to survive and save her friend in the end.
