Fleetwood ia introduced as the focal character, we are quick to discover she is pregnant and very lonely. As the story develops we are introduced to Alice, Fleetwood's new friend and midwife but can she be trusted? Can old family friends be trusted? Can family even be trusted? How many people will really let Fleetwood down?
I will start by saying this is not my usual kind of read and therefore my expectations were unfairly not high. However i was pleasantly surprised by how much i enjoyed this book. I particularly loved the character development we as an audience witnessed and how subtley and therefore naturally this progression occurred. This is not a book for a quick or light read and those unfamiliar with the old English Language used may struggle slightly. I enjoyed the historical aspects to the book and loved the additional information at the end. I felt it was slightly slow to start but this was more down to scene setting and the book did pick up pace and suspense as it went on resulting in an unexpected conclusion. Whilst maybe not the easiest read, it kept my attention and i am greatly looking forward to the foundling.
