I am an absolute fan of anything and everything to do with the Pende witches.
Apart from being part of one of the biggest crimes against women in this country the hills and valleys around Pendle are amazing. The witches walk up Pendle hill is also well worth doing should you ever find yourself in that part of the country.
Hence I love this book! I couldn't believe that someone has actually taken incorporated the mysticism of Pendle and the history of the witch trials into a fantastically eerie and Gothic tale.
Meshing fact with fiction is a difficult task for any writer so hats off to Stacey Halls for trying to make that particular era in history as real as possible.
I was immediately drawn into the novel by Fleetwood's dilemma - knowing her fourth pregnancy could kill her (a situation her husband had decided to keep from her)and not wanting to die, nor have another stillborn child. When offered a remedy she, like anyone, takes it and has to deal with the consequences of that decision.
