This has been the best book I have read in a long, long time.

The story follows 17-year-old Fleetwood Shuttleworth in her struggle to have a child with her husband, Richard.

The story is written to be placed in the 1600s, this is an era that is tumultuous as a woman. Anyone and everyone is being labelled as a witch, to get revenge on a surly neighbour or try to clear their own name... and Fleetwood's midwife, Alice Grey, is caught up in the middle of a conspiracy.

This story is written beautifully, the author really did her research to ensure that the facts were there. The behaviours of the gentry and the King were almost exactly representative of the truth. Amazing.

The pace was also fantastic, leaving me wanting more and more. I had to keep turning the page to find out exactly what was going to happen next.
