Laura Vaughan's first novel for adults gets off to a great start. In The Favour Ada is embarking on an trip to Italy for gap year students partly financed by her godmother, Delilah. Ada' father, Anthony, died when Ada was just thirteen and she and her mother left their country home in Wales and moved to London. Anthony was Ada's stepfather but, as her father had died before she was born, he was the only father she'd ever known. In London, Ada's mother goes out to work and Ada starts a local school but never really feels she fits in. After leaving school she hoped to go to Oxford but fails the interview and so Delilah suggests the two month trip to Italy. Ada delays entrance to the place she's been offered at UCL for a year and finds part-time work to save money for going to Italy in the springtime. When she gets the details of the other students she realises they all seem to come from wealthy backgrounds and, once again, she wonders if she'll fit in. One of the students will die in mysterious circumstances and Ada will discover she's been keeping a huge secret. The first impression promises a very enjoyable read with mysteries and intrigue along the way.
