A solid 3.5, well written prose and detailed description of Italian art combine to give a super sense of location. The reader is transported to Venice, to Florence to Rome and their art history and in these times of Covid that alone sets you off on a virtual holiday. Although it’s clear this isn’t the kind of holiday anyone wants to be on.

Unfortunately I found the characters hard to like and this slowed the narrative for me. I didn’t find one character I could sympathise with or understand, the first 1/3 of the book was slowest of all and I think that’s because the initial drama you would expect from a novel is slow to transpire. I think had the incident happened earlier in the book I may have been pushed on at grater pace.

This is a book for lovers of great prose, twists and turns, dark characters and mystery are to be found in every page.

I was kindly provided with an advanced readers copy of the Favour by readers first in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
