I liked the idea of this book more than the actuality.
As a classicist and frequent traveller (pre lockdown) to Italy where my sister lives, I was really looking forward to reading The Favour. Unfortunately, I didn’t really relate to any of the characters and found it very slow going.
Ada’s life is knocked off track at the age of 13 when her father dies and her mother is forced to sell their country house in Wales and move to Brockley. At 18, Ada fails to secure a place at Oxford and defers her place at UCL in order to join a history and art appreciation course in Italy which is financed by her godmother, Delilah. Ada tries in vain to fit in with the other students on the course believing that she will form friendships which will continue into the future. Then one of the group dies and the repercussions do indeed affect Ada and the group in different ways for many year afterwards.
Although not a book I particularly enjoyed, I can appreciate that it was well written.
