one word: plain. perhaps this adult fiction is too complicated for the mind of a 16 year old (with a taste for YA fantasy books, not adult fiction), but i found the story line to be incredibly flat. i really found it hard to connect with any of the characters, as most were dull and made me angry more than anything else.
again, maybe it’s just my age, but i found it really difficult to relate to the main character (ada howell, the trouble teen, resenting her mother for abandoning a life that her father had left behind). she was too mature for my liking, and the lack of detailed internal thoughts made it a chore to get through certain events. maybe laura vaughan should’ve made ada a little bit older, i don’t know (again, maybe that’s just my age).
overall, this wasn’t really my cup of tea- even if i was excited to read it just for the pretty cover. if this was a YA fiction, i’m sure i’d enjoy it a lot more :)
