Our protagonist Ada thinks she deserves much better from life. After a taste of the good life is snatched away from her she can’t resist the opportunity to join the dillatante on a tour of Italy to learn about art history alongside some very wealthy peers. Ada knows this was the life she was destined for - and all she has to do is ingratiate herself into their circle and then they’ll be friends for life. What could possibly go wrong?
I really didn’t like Ada. She’s vacuous and has no real connections to anyone. She puts aside building real friendships and enjoying the beauty of Italy in her effort to climb the social ladder. I didn’t really warm to her as the book went on. The authors descriptions of Italy (particularly Venice) are beautifully written & I really enjoyed that part of this book and this would definitely make me want to read future books by Laura Vaughan - I just could not get on board with this bunch of characters.
