The Favour is a slow burner in my opinion, which could be a reflection of Ada finding her feet in the world as she navigates a world she longs to be part of. Soon enough though, the plot is thick with unexpected twists and surprises. Masks and deception are a main theme, along with desire.
Laura Vaughan creates characters who keep you guessing, and a plot that mimicks the winding streets of Venice. The story itself is a tragic one, but thought-provoking nonetheless. Are we all just wearing masks and trying to fit in? How often do we choose the right path?
By the time I'd read halfway through The Favour, I couldn't put it down. I would recommend this book to any lover of Italy and art. A great holiday read.
My only disappointment was with the ending - if I was Ada I would have acted differently. For Vaughan to create a character who the reader feels so strongly about is a clever device.
