I'm really glad I decided to branch out into the romance genre for a spot of light reading because this book was an absolute delight.
To begin with I was cautious, knowing how much I dislike romance subplots in horrors and thrillers, however because this one's whole thing was the romantic aspect, it was straightforward and focused and I quickly shook off the initial icky feeling it gave me.
In my usual genres, I don't tend to find many characters I like, so it was a lovely change coming into Tiffy and Leon's world and both of them being so cute and loveable. Unfortunately I did feel like Tiffy's character was the biggest 'I'm quirky and beautiful but I don't know it' trope, but she was still fun to read about despite this.
I also initially struggled with the way in which Leon's POV's were written - meant to highlight his quietness and preference to speak little, the sentences are written in a choppy way and speech isn't formatted as normal. However, I soon got over that because I was too interested to see where the plot was headed.
Something I really enjoyed about this book, other than the slightly outlandish but still very sweet romantic plotline, was that there were other smaller stories happening at the same time that kept the plot from going stale. My favourite being an elderly hospice patient trying to find old love he met during the war.
My main worry about romantic fictional stories is that so many of them feel unrealistic, and this one certainly did fall under that bracket, especially towards the end. However because I liked the characters and I wanted to see how things would pan out, I shook off all my reservations and just went with the sickly sweet flow of it all.
Overall I'm so happy I picked this up. It was a lovely change from the darker fiction I'm normally drawn too and it's opened me up to a new genre entirely.
