This book is for anyone interested in theatre, social history, the American civil war and trust.
This is a simple linear story with no confusing flashbacks or changes of narrator. May is a lonely seamstress who finds herself working on a theatre boat which stops at a different place each night along the Ohio river to entertain the local inhabitants. The time is 1838 and the Ohio river is the natural division between the North and South. Unwittingly, May becomes involved in the plight of runaway slaves.
The tension is skilfully increased to a clever climax.
Everything about this book is delightful - the cover, the story, the characters and the skill of the author in telling the tale.
I shall definitely be adding the other Martha Conway books to my reading list.
