I tried to read this book a few times but I found it a real struggle. Regardless, it does have potential. The setting is one of division and prejudice and everyone has a decision to make as to which side they’re on. May Bedloe is left alone and penniless with few options. However, there is a ray of light: the floating theatre.

She’s a creative girl and has clear skills with needlework. She becomes a huge asset and invaluable. She settles in nicely with the other charismatic actors.

But it’s hard work and there is trouble wherever your look. The north and south divide means that they’re all in danger, constantly.

May has yet another decision to make. She’s compelled to transport secret passengers under the darkness and along the Underground Railroad. She runs the risk of being found out and she’s obviously putting her own life in danger.
