I’m leaning more towards 4 stars for this book so we’ll average out and give it a 3.5 - because did I like it or did I really like it?

This book came to me in A Box Of Stories - a subscription company who saves books, which haven’t had the marketing budget, from the pulp. You don’t get to choose the books you receive which is what drew me to them. I’m always hating the “what book do I read next” decision and them giving me books out of my “normal” genres will definitely expand my reading horizon.

I’ve never read a book from the 19th century and I loved learning about what life was like back then. The awful slave trade and the proper ways lady’s handled themselves with their sewing.

I, for one, cannot sew to save my life. I was in awe of how May handled herself and her character development was a pleasure to read. She went from prim and proper to questioning real life and how she could make a difference in the world.

Her relationships grew, especially with the people who cared enough to learn how to deal with her; she hasn’t quite got a filter and cannot stand even the smallest of mistruths - a baby cow being called a calf is my favourite.

The more I go on the more I want to change it to 4 stars so perhaps when I come round to rereading this book I’ll change my mind.
