Often murder mysteries can be written in a pedestrian fashion, peddling cheap cliches and featuring an over-reliance on dialogue. From the opening excerpt, this book seems to buck this trend entirely.

The writer seems to be a wordsmith, weaving beautiful writing into the story. This seems to slow the pace of the story a little. Many other mysteries I've read have moved at a more bone-rattling pace, but often they have little substance and are entirely forgettable.

This reads like a book that would draw you in for more than a nail-biting plot and would stick with you for a long time after you close the cover on the final page.

Even in this small excerpt, the characters are already taking shape and are clearly going to be more than two-dimensional bit players in a predictable drama. I want to know more about them and I also want to find out how the story ends, but most importantly, I know I would enjoy the reading along the way.
