Not what I expected

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I began 'The Forgers' by Bradford Morrow but it certainly wasn't what I got. I think I was expecting a murder mystery set amongst the elite of the book collecting world, perhaps a modern take on an Agatha Christie novel, but what I got was a dark thriller with few surprises.

Although I thought the premise of the book as well as the writing was good I just wasn't as hooked as I usually am by crime themed novels. I thought I would fly through the 242 pages in less than a day but at times I didn't feel desperate to pick it up again.

I think the main reason for this was the main character, I found him difficult to relate to, hard to understand and quite often unlikable, I didn't feel an urge to root for him.

The story line progressed in quite a straightforward way and I found myself anticipating and creating intricate developments to the plot, none of which took place because as it turns out there weren't really any huge twists that weren't hinted at early on.

Having said this though if you begin reading the book without expecting a good old murder mystery and expect more of a dark look at family relationships and a personal psychological journey then it is certainly worth a read.
