Adam Diehl’s life is hanging by a thread in Montauk, Long Island. His apartment has been trashed and there are vandalised rare books strewn everywhere. Set among the rare book world, is Adam’s sister, beside herself with grief, and Will, our narrator (Megan’s boyfriend) and himself a past dabbler in the forging of books which resulted in an arrest.

Moving between New York and Ireland, Will starts to receive sinister letters and the reader starts to realise not everything is as it seems. Will’s dubious past starts to catch up with him and he is finding it increasingly difficult to hide this from Megan. The fact that Will and Adam disliked each other intensely raises questions for the reader from the beginning.

Did I like the book? I loved the way it was written. The language is beautiful and although set in the present day, this could have been set at any time previously. The storyteller is intelligent but a narcissist and therefore not particularly likeable but this all adds to the dark atmosphere of a novel I really enjoyed. We see just how far Will will go to protect Megan and to keep his secrets.

I didn't find the ending a surprise. There is a twist but sadly I'd guessed it quite early on and therefore I can only award it 4 stars. It's a quick read, and beautifully written.
