The novel opens with a mother admitting her newborn into care. The author captures the emotions well: Bess’s composed exterior is betrayed only by the heartbreaking questions she asks when handing over baby Clara. This composure continues through to the vibrant market scene, as she attempts to carry on, business as usual. I look forward to finding out whether Bess is able to cope with her loss, and the steps she takes to reclaim her daughter.

The jacket is beautiful, the artwork instantly recognisable to those familiar with the author’s previous novel.
