The cover is stunning, I love how it matches style of The Familiars, even if the books are not linked in story. The illustrations on the title page are gorgeous too.
From this first impression, I feel like this is a story that could make me very angry - but in a good way. The writing is emotive and I found myself so easily caught up in it, my heart broke for Bess and her father, especially his stoic little peace offerings - it reminded me so much of my own dad.
