We open to a newborn Clara and her mother Bess. Less than a day old and she is being given over to The Foundling, a hospital for babies where the mothers cannot care for them. The beautiful description of the building is what has swayed me into being interested in this book. The synopsis didn't pull me in straight away but after recently reading Dangerous Alliance I have been more inclined to read 'historical' fiction and the First Look did not disappoint. The writing is beautiful in itself, creating imagery that is clearly showing in my mind of both the world and Bess's emotions during what appears to be a very difficult time for her.
