Bess seems to be a dedicated, caring and determined woman that has been dealt difficult cards to play with but is determined to make the most out of the situation to ensure that her child is healthy, loved and ultimately successful. From the first few pages, one can know that they will be able to connect with these characters and side by them through their struggles.
