I really enjoyed the authors first book (The Familiars), so had high hopes for this new story from her. As she had a special interest in the subject matter of the first novel, I was a little cautious going into this one that the world might not be as detailed or well-imagined, but I needn't have worried.
From the beginning, the description of the event at the Foundling hospital had me completely captivated (and a little appalled), and it instantly drew me in. Stacey Halls has a way of writing, with small details that engage all your senses, that creates such a vivid world, with characters that feel so real that you want to know more about them.
The main character Bess, who gives up her child at the beginning, has real heart, as well as a strength of character that piques your interest. I can't wait to read the rest of the book.
The cover is charming, slightly period in feel which is in keeping with the nature of the genre, and also nicely familiar to those who have read Hall's first novel.
