The synopsis is intriguing, and it sounds like the plot should have some good twists and turns. The historical setting and detail is immersive without being overwhelming, and the situation of Bess and the other women at the hospital is heartbreaking. Her desperation and pain is not over-stated, which I felt made it more emotional to read.

I found Bess an engaging protagonist who I’ll happily stick with for the journey and hope things turn out better for her and Clara.

I really like this cover and the fact that it is cohesive with ‘The Familiars’. I recognised the cover style straight away, but it is also distinctive in its own right. It is a beautiful cover, one that jumped out and made me want to read the synopsis.
