The book starts with Bess and her father waiting to see if her new-born daughter will be taken in as a foundling. Having drawn a red ball from the bag she must wait to see if someone else's baby will fail the medical test so that her baby can take its place.
The setting, place and time, have a Dickensian feel to start with but I found the writing much more enjoyable and the story flowed nicely.
I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
