The first chapter nearly broke my heart. It is unflinching in its evocation of a world of poverty and pain. The central character is interesting and well realised. I enjoy historical fiction and this hums with the energy of Billingsgate market and the lives of its inhabitants. The cover is attractive but the story really drew me in.
