Bess, an unmarried mother, takes her day old baby daughter, Clara to the Foundling hospital. She takes a token to identify the baby as she intends on collecting her, eventually.
It takes a few years but Bess works hard as a shrimp seller for her father, Abe, and manages to save £2. So she goes to collect Clara, only to be told she had already been collected the day after Bess had dropped her off. They said her mother had picked her up...but Bess is her mother so who was it.
