The narrative voice is immediately engaging, and the author makes us sympathise with and root for Bess, our main character. I usually don’t like historical fiction all that much but the writing and characters here are easy the connect to despite being set in 1754.

I enjoy the cover a lot; it is aesthetically pleasing with a good blend of colours and is successful at suggesting the kind of genre it may fall in.

I am intrigued to find out how the novel explores themes of motherhood and womanhood in this historical setting. The beginning sets up an interesting discussion of how women and mothers were treated during the 18th century.
