I haven't read the preceding book to this novel, but I have heard good things. The cover art is wonderful, so vibrant but not in an intrusive way, it's muted colours but lots of details make it really interesting.

Having not read the Familiars I don't know if the characters are the same, whilst it's not a novel I would perhaps choose to buy of my own volition I found the scene setting and descriptions used by Stacey Hall transport me into the book.

Whilst the story and blurb makes this sound less like my sort of read I was still impressed with the style and quality of the opening pages, and could see myself branching out and reading this as something a bit different.
