I thought the author's previous book, The Familiars, was fabulous and the opening chapters of The Foundling give me a sense of the same wonderful writing. The scene of Bess handing over her baby daughter, Clara, to the Foundling Hospital was heartbreaking. I loved the description of Billingsgate fish market - so atmospheric and full of period detail.
