Six years after leaving her daughter Clara at the Foundling Hospital in London, Bess goes back to reclaim her. When she is told the news that somebody has already reclaimed her daughter only a day after she was originally dropped off, Bess is horrified and heartbroken. She is determined to find out what happened to her daughter and get her back.
As a mother, I found this book very upsetting in some places. I was crying within the first chapter. I found Bess very relatable and felt a real connection to her. I really wanted this story to have a happy ending.
The story is mostly told from the perspective of Bess, however there were also parts narrated by Alexandria - the woman who has been raising Bess's daughter as her own. Alexandria was lonely and isolated. She was terrified of leaving the house due to traumas from her past so only ever went out to go to church on Sundays. I really enjoyed reading Alexandra's narrative and getting to hear both sides of the story.
