Having read the first novel which was beautifully written I was keen to see what Stacey Halls had to offer next!

I was not at all disappointed! Right from the opening few paragraphs I was intrigued and couldn't wait to read on. I love historical fiction and this story instantly educated and drew me in emotionally.

Bess, the strong main character is a shrimp seller in 18th century London, has just given birth to a daughter she cannot keep.

Halls has a talent for setting the scene of a story so vividly that I felt I could see and smell the Thames riverside , hear the fisherman and their boats as they came in and was yawning alongside them as the sun rose!

It introduces the reader immediately to the terrible plight of working class young women in the era and how enduring they had to be. If you enjoyed The Familars , this is a fresh subject but with the same easy flow and clever storytelling. You will not be disappointed .
