This was a nice easy read, with some lovely scenes between mother and daughter which were heartwarming.

However, a great deal of suspension of disbelief was needed.

The story tells of Bess, who after a one night stand with a merchant, falls pregnant. Being poor she had little choice but to leave her child at the Foundling hospital. Six years later when she returns to claim her daughter she finds she was already claimed by someone giving her name and address.

Obviously a devastating event for Bess. But luckily the next day she accidentally bumps into the woman who took her child, and conveniently gets a job as nursemaid looking after the child with whom she makes an immediate bond.

Ignoring the convenient plot devices the writing was charming, and compelling and I did enjoy it a great deal.
