This book was such a rollercoaster of emotion. I listened to the audiobook, and was instantly immersed in the 1700s. The actresses were incredible, and brought the book to life.

The story is heart-breaking and heart-warming in equal measures. I could feel Bess' panic building once she returns to The Foundling, and found myself panicking alongside her, eager to read on and find out what had happened. The writing is beautiful, and filled with vivid descriptions of life in the 1700s.

Alexandra first came across as a cold and stern character, but despite this, I found myself warming to her. The different experiences of motherhood that Bess and Alexandra experience add a depth to the novel, and it was fascinating to see how the book resolves this. Finally, the supporting characters are no less captivating, with Lyle & Dr Mead being a couple of my favourite.

I cannot wait to see what this author does next!
