With a really interesting premise, I really enjoyed this book and made me want to know more about the Foundling Hospital in London.

The book is told in the differing POVs of Bess and Alexandra. I was more engaged in Bess’s chapters as her desperation came through. Alexandra is a harder character to warm to, but this is entirely intentional. I liked how the chapters highlighted the differences of the classes in this period, through the attitudes shown towards the characters, and also their wealth, living standards and positions in society. I liked this glimpse of London.

I did find the ending a little too neat and easy, but this didn’t detract from how much I enjoyed this novel. I really like Stacey Hall’s style of writing, and look forward to what she comes out with next.
