Let's just start with appreciating what a stunning cover this book has. Never judge a book by a cover they say, but if I hadn't of read this yet & saw it sitting proudly on a shelf, I would be naturally drawn to it.

I was so excited to be one of the lucky chosen winners for this book. I love a good period drama and it certainly didn't disappoint.

Set in London in the 1700s, young Bess, who lives in poverty & sells Shrimp to make a wage, feels she has no choice but to give up her illegitimate newborn.
Travelling to the Foundling Hospital; a place where babes are cared until either the biological parents want to 'buy' their child back or the child comes of age. Bess, accompanied by her father, leaves her not even a day old daughter, with the promise she will be back when she has enough money to properly care for her.
Fast forward 6 years and as Bess travels back to the Foundling Hospital to reclaim her only child, she is left in utter shock to find that not only has someone already been for the child, literally a day after she was dropped off, but that person was Bess Bright, herself!

The author has done a splendid job of capturing what life would of been like back in the 18th century, the huge divide between the rich and poor, and the unique, quirky personalities of each character.
It's a book that had me immersed from the first page, and one that I can't recommend enough.
