The Foundling is a beautifully written story that was enchanting and captivating to read. At first glance, it wasn't a story that I would have thought would be for me, due to the subject matter. However, after getting a little glimpse of the story, I was hooked and couldn't put the book down! The author's writing style is beautiful, raw and captures 18th century London perfectly. It doesn't sugar coat anything, and this is largely apparent in the contrasting class divisions between Bess and the woman who had taken her daughter Clara (I won't spoil her identity). While being historical fiction, there are large elements of suspense and mystery scattered throughout the story, which I found compelling. I also loved the representation and interpretation of Agoraphobia and the character development which ensued from it. I'm glad I chose to pick this book up and give it a chance despite it being far from my usual go-to genre. It was such an endearing and heartwarming story, and I'm really happy with how it was wrapped up in the end. It's definitely worth a read!
