Curiosity of how Clara was being reclaimed by her mom, Bess where she only came for her at a later date! The build of the story is good and like how the story started to attract one's attention to pickup this book to read to know the story behind it. Bess was brave to face the situation she is in and has adopted Charlotte as her child however, she can never replaced Clara in her heart. Through Dr Mead that a caretaker was employed to help Mrs Callard as Bess was married to Daniel Callard. With a new member brought to her life, Bess had to know what role she should play to Charlotte as a mother or caretaker or both ?
