Fantastic follow-up to The Familiars!
What an enjoyable follow up novel to The Familiars this is! Set in Georgian London, it fellows the story of two women from very different class and positions: firstly, Bess, who as a teenager is forced to give away her daugher Clara to The Foundling Hospital and, secondly, Alexandra a wealthy childless widow living in Bloomsbury. Through a set of chance encounters, the two women’s lives become entangled in the most phenomenal of ways.
The novel is told through a dual narrative here and, for me, this works beautifully: for me, I felt sympathy for both women - I understood both of their motivations and reasons. There’s also some cracking secondary characters, especially Abe for me - all set against a very evocatively describes Georgian London.
