In London in 1747, Bess Bright finds herself on her own and pregnant and is forced to give up her baby daughter Clara to The Foundling Hospital but she always plans to return when she has enough a money. In 1754 we are reunited with Bess as she returns to the hospital to take her daughter home. Except when Bess gets there she finds her daughter has already be claimed by her!

This book is completely immersive. As soon as you start reading you are thrown into 18th century London and can just hear the hawkers in the Billingsgate fish markets. Really great book.
